As early as the 1980s, Werner Bergmann and Rainer Erb, with their concept of communication latency, suggested that negative statements about Israel might be a form of indirect or «detour» communication, as such statements are less negatively sanctioned than negative statements about Jews. However, there is a problem when this concept leads to a situation where almost any criticism of Israeli policies is considered a detour communication for antisemitic attitudes. This report presents an overview of surveys that have explored the relationship between antisemitism and attitudes towards Israel.
