Identification Card Marked With Letter “J”

The sheet metal worker Leopold Meyer Rothmann was born in Oslo on May 25, 1917. He participated in the defense of Norway in 1940 and was taken prisoner at Heistadmoen (yet released shortly thereafter). During the arrest of Jewish men on October 26, 1942 Rothmann was dispatched to Berg prison camp outside Tønsberg. On November 26, 1942 he was deported to Stettin on the SS Donau, and then by train to Auschwitz, where he was murdered on January 13, 1943. His parents and sister were sent to the gas chamber immediately upon arrival at Auschwitz on December 1, 1942.
